Artistic Director and Founder

Caron Daley is Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University where she conducts the Voices of Spirit, Pappert Women’s Chorale, and University Singers, and teaches undergraduate and graduate choral conducting. She is also Founder and Artistic Director of the Halifax Choral Conducting Institute, a summer training program for choral conductors, and Music Director of the Junior Mendelssohn Choir, the youth branch of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh.

 

A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Caron has held past conducting appointments with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, University of Toronto, Trinity Western University, Dalhousie University, National Youth Choir of Canada, Salem Academy and College, and St. Michael’s Choir School. In demand as a guest conductor and clinician, she regularly conducts State, Regional, District, and Provincial festival choirs and has presented workshops at national and international conferences.

 

A certified Dalcroze Eurhythmics practitioner, Caron’s current research explores the effects of hand movements on vocal articulation, the use of Dalcroze Eurhythmics in conducting pedagogy, and the teaching of women conductors. In 2019, she begins a funded research study on the use of manual mimicry gestures in the teaching of German diction in higher education-based vocal training with speech-language pathologist, Dr. Heather Rusiewicz-Leavy. Caron is published in Anacrusis, Being Music, Canadian Music Educator, Research Memorandum Series of Chorus America, Teaching Music through Performance in Choir, Vol. 4 and 5 (upcoming)and Choral Journal.

 

Caron is also active as a solo and choral singer and has performed with Voces Solis, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Symphony Nova Scotia, Halifax Camerata, Bel Canto Company, North Carolina Symphony, North Carolina Master Chorale and Chamber Choir, Columbus Bach Ensemble, Columbus Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Festival Ensemble of the European Music Festival, and the National Youth Choir of Canada.

 

Caron holds a D.M.A. in Choral Conducting from the University of Toronto, an M.M. in Choral Conducting and M.A. in Vocal Pedagogy from The Ohio State University, an Artist Diploma in Voice and B.M. in Music Education from Western University, and an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Canada Diploma in Voice.

 

An active member of the American Choral Directors Association, Caron is President-Elect of ACDA-Pennsylvania.

 

Caron lives in Pittsburgh, PA with her husband, baby, and cat. She maintains a busy conducting studio for local conductors and teaches conducting online to students from around the world.
